The Capsule, Removed

CoffeeB began with an awkward question: if the coffee inside a capsule is what matters, why is the capsule there at all? The answer, developed through Swiss engineering, was to remove it entirely.

What remains is the Coffee Ball: freshly roasted ground coffee pressed into a sphere and protected by a thin layer made from plant- and mineral-based materials. One of its principal components is alginate, which forms a natural barrier against oxygen while helping the ball retain its shape and aroma.

There is no aluminium or plastic capsule to dispose of. After brewing, the used Coffee Ball is garden-compostable and can be placed in home compost or an appropriate organic-waste collection.

Developed by Delica, the Swiss company behind Café Royal, the system offers espresso, ristretto, lungo, decaffeinated, organic and flavoured coffees, subject to availability. Every CoffeeB variety is certified either by Rainforest Alliance or through a combination of organic and Fairtrade certification.

CoffeeB coffee is roasted and the Coffee Balls are produced in Birsfelden, Switzerland. Each variety offers its own intensity, cup size and flavour profile, from full-bodied espresso to gentler lungo and flavoured selections.

Coffee Balls can only be prepared using a compatible CoffeeB machine. The brewing system was designed around their distinctive shape and protective layer—it was not adapted from a conventional capsule machine.
